How do we optimize our videos for shareability on Facebook? 

 

TRAITS OF VIRALITY

 

  • Tell a story
  • Our appetite for stories is a reflection of the basic human need to understand patterns of life. Stories are a way to reach out to people and emotionally connect.
  • Challenge or confirm people’s assumptions
  • When people hear that they’re right or wrong about something – their ears perk up.
  • Inspire people to take action
  • Not only does this content get shared – but it also has a profound impact on the people watching it.
  • Have unexpected twists
  • This is often the most memorable part of any great piece of content.
  • Make people laugh
  • You want your brand to be associated with positive emotions.
  • Have an underdog story
  • Everybody loves a story with unexpected heroes.
  • Have a fresh point of view – even about common things
  • Every single topic that exists can be explained in a new way.
  • Utilize trending topics
  • If you tie your content to what’s currently trending, you have a good shot at reaching more people.

 

VR/AR Pioneers suggests using the following structure:

    • Square formatting for the final video
      • White sections at top and bottom
    • Catchy permanent title
    • A color-branded progress bar that moves from left to right marking video progress
    • Big subtitles at the bottom of the composition
    • The catchy moment in the first second of the video
    • The video should make sense without sound as +85% of FB videos is watched on mute.

Facebook videos should be engaged with and ideally shared by other pages within one hour of being posted to maximize exposure via FB’s suggestions on people’s newsfeed.

 

Lessons learned

You can’t sprinkle chocolate on lemon cake and wish for it to turn into chocolate cake. It has to be mixed into the batter. Similarly, you can’t sprinkle virality on top of a social media page. It needs to be built into it from the beginning. There is no “viral” strategy for a non-viral video.

It starts with WHO you film doing WHAT and WHO you know will share it.

The goal is ALWAYS to make the video shareable– not likeable and not commentable.

Relateable is shareable.
