This year’s Places_ event, being held in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf in the heart of the Ruhr Metropolis, Germany, is again the stage for the avant-garde of immersive technology. Hosting a cavalcade of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) exhibitors, speakers and workshops, Places_ is Europe’s must-attend event for indie developers in the XR scene.
The event is aimed squarely at startups, young professionals and entrepreneurs within the XR industry. Attendees will be given the opportunity to discover the latest innovations with a daily schedule filled with a variety of activities and talks.
Starting off on the first day the workshops are led by proven experts. Acting as a place for joint learning with a high level of practical relevance, developers can learn from the experience of others while also networking with like-minded individuals to share their existing knowledgebase. Then, for the evening’s entertainment, the Startup Pitch event will offer the opportunity to pitch in front of investors and experts, gaining tips on essential practical skills such as deck design, delivery, and stage presence.
Friday, 16th May 2020, will be the busiest day of all; Experience_ Places is where partners of the festival present their applications freely, Late Night VR offers networking until late in the evening and a 24-hour hackathon will change the way you go about planning your next green-light.

Startup pitch and networking event
To kick off the networking event on Thursday evening, extended reality startups have the opportunity to pitch in front of investors and experts. Afterward, there is sufficient opportunity for the entire community to network and exchange ideas.
The workshop program is aimed at managers of medium-sized and large companies, as well as everyone who wants to find out more about the use of extended reality technology in professional contexts. The workshops are industry-specific and are led by proven experts. They see themselves as a place for joint learning and have a high level of practical relevance.

Extended Reality in the Reality Check: The program partners of the Places _ VR Festival present their applications freely at over 20 exciting locations in the Creative Quarter. The perfect stage for innovations and experiments from all industries and areas of life – extensive testing is expressly desired.
VR for kids
No generation was exposed to electronic media as much as today. Therefore, in the program section “VR for Kids” we not only offer age-appropriate content for children and adolescents but also show our own VR application for parents, which provides information about the current status of media research in the area of extended reality.
Late Night VR
On Places-2020, Places _ 2020 is open longer. Up to 10 p.m., particularly entertaining offers will be presented at selected locations, aimed at a broad consumer target group. Here you can discover tomorrow’s entertainment today.
In 24 hours from the briefing to the finished extended reality prototype. This is the challenge at the Places _ Hackathon. Participants from various disciplines, from programmers to designers to sociologists and artists, are invited to take up the challenge.
DIVR Science Award
In cooperation with the German Institute for Virtual Realities (DIVR), the DIVR Science Award is given for the most innovative university projects in the field of extended reality. The award nominees present their applications to the public at the Places _ VR Festival and face the evaluation of a renowned jury of experts from business, research, and society.
Creative _ Places offers space for creative experiments and would like to enable artistic exchange and innovations. Six extended reality artists form a living and working community in the Kreativ.Quartier Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf for a week. The highlight of the week is a group exhibition of immersive works of art. The perfect stage for creative minds from far and wide.
